Flipping luxury watches has become a high wire act where fewer and fewer models can be bought at retail and resold for an instant profit.
But pick the right piece, ideally a limited edition, and there are still significant margins to be made.
A pink-dialled version of Tudor’s Black Bay Chronograph, made in collaboration with Inter Miami, which is partly owned by Tudor brand ambassador David Beckham, is this year’s outstanding example.
Unveiled just ahead of Watches and Wonders Geneva in March, the watch was made in the same colour at the Inter Miami team strip.
The Black Bay in pink is based on a watch created for Mr Beckham’s fellow Tudor ambassador Jay Chou and spotted on the wrist of the Taiwanese musician.
Tudor would not describe the watch as a limited edition but then added that “few will ever be made”.
Tudor priced the steel on steel 41m watch at the standard Black Bay Chrono price of £4,790 / $5,675 / EUR 5,680, and it was instantly seen across social media on the wrists of major celebrities including Kevin O’Leary, star of Shark Tank, the American iteration of Dragons’ Den in the UK.
All that hype has done the trick. The Tudor Black Bay Chrono Inter Miami edition is among the hottest watches of the year on the secondary market.
Examples being offered today include a piece with Subdial for £14,500, triple its retail price.
Chrono24 has a piece listed, optimistically, at £19,500 while eBay sellers are offering the watch at prices between £14,000 and £20,000.
White-dialled versions of the Tudor Black Bay Chrono are current trading at an under retail price of around £3,500 to £4,000.
